How to use the most “simplo” steps to china product photography outdoors

27 Oct How to use the most “simplo” steps to china product photography outdoors

With the advent of the e-commerce era, the status of  china product photography has become increasingly important. Whether it is a professional photographer, a seller who wants to shoot their own goods, or a buyer who wants to take a show of their favorite items, they need to master some china product photography skills.

This article introduces you to the most “smallest” (the least used equipment, the easiest steps), and the effect is also very good – in the outdoor use of natural light for china product photography , children’s shoes with related needs may wish to try.

1. What do you need to prepare?

If a worker wants to do something good, he must first sharpen his tools. In addition to the most basic cameras, you also need to prepare these things:

Lens: For the best shot, you need a lens with a close focus distance (if you’re shooting a small item), and the focal length is not too short enough for you to use a “fill frame” composition. When you shoot a very small object, you may need to use a macro lens.

Tripod: “The pursuit of” should use a tripod, which can effectively improve the image quality; in addition, when you shoot macro subjects, stability will become more important.

Outdoor space: meets three conditions – good light, relatively clean, enough space.

White and black cards: Prepare some white/black cards depending on the size of the subject (the PVC board works best, but the printed paper can also be used), which can be used to reflect/absorb light from a given area.

Thin paper towels: Transparent, thin white paper towels can “filter” out the direct light, playing the role of an approximate soft plate. It works better when shooting small objects. It would be better if you had a five-in-one reflector.

Background board (optional): If the background of the outdoor space is not good enough, you can also bring some background boards with special textures and patterns, such as a small piece of wood with a beautiful texture, or a specific print with a specific Patterned large coated paper.

If you are a professional product photographer, it is best to start with a ColorChecker Passport for accurate color correction.

This stuff is expensive, it’s not very useful for ordinary subjects, but for commercial china product photography , it needs to be extremely accurate to restore the color of the product.

Once you’ve got the equipment outfits, you can start the formal shooting steps.

2. Shooting steps

The first step: looking for space

Finding an outdoor space that is well lit and provides you with a good background is probably the most important step – unless your subject is small enough to fill your own background with your own background.

Since china product photography needs to keep the whole body clear, you can’t use too much aperture. If you need to blur the background, please use a lens with a longer focal length and extend the distance from the subject to the background – so you need a certain amount of space.

As for the lighting conditions, it is related to the weather. A cloudy day without direct sunlight is the ideal situation. With some props, you can achieve perfect control of light.

Step 2: Layout the site

Look back and forth in the space of your choice, first hold the camera, use the viewfinder to observe the surrounding environment, and evaluate “Which area and angle is better”; after finding the right position, fix the position with a tripod. .

If the area you have selected has direct light, use your diffuser to process the light. The early stages of the layout can save a lot of things in your late ring.

Since the diffuser or other light diffusing device changes the color of the light, this step must be before color management.

Solve direct light in advance with a light diffusing device
Incidentally, if this step is not done well, it is likely that this will happen in the next steps:

Due to the direct light, the contrast is high, and the details of the shadows and highlights are lost.
The third step: color management

china product photography requires accurate color. You need to customize the white balance, place a gray card (or white paper) in the approximate position of the product and take a full-screen close-up of it, then set the photo as a white balance in the menu.

This step needs to be done before shooting, and if the lighting conditions change, you need to reset it; if you use the passport color card as shown below, you can achieve perfect color calibration in the later stages.

After completing the color correction, place the subject at the selected position, take a few shots, select the best composition, and then start selecting the aperture.

Step 4: Select the aperture

For china product photography , in most cases you need to choose an aperture that keeps the subject as clear as possible and retains the details.

Since the depth of field also receives the camera’s focal length and shooting distance, small objects closer to the camera (especially when using a macro lens) will be shallower than other scenes and require a smaller aperture.

If you want, you can choose a different aperture for the test shot and compare. The depth-of-field preview button is useful; you can also play back on the LCD screen after a test shot to zoom in on the part.

Step 5: Fine-tune the light

After selecting the appropriate aperture value, observe the image for illumination analysis.

It can be seen that the overall exposure is relatively uniform, but if you are more “excellent”, you can use the white card / black card to fill the light / make shadows.

For example, if you feel that the left side of the subject is still somewhat dark (especially the head), you can use a white card to fill the light. By adjusting the angle and distance of the card, you can control the area and intensity of the fill light.

Use white card to fill light, the brightness on the left side is increased
Conversely, if you want to add some shadows locally, for example, to add some shadow to the back of the robot to enhance the stereoscopic effect, you can use the black card to “absorb” the light and create a shadow.

Use black cards to absorb light and create shadows
This step is not indispensable, or even cumbersome, but it can be said to be the most important step in the “professional” work – the details of the details, carefully crafted, is the most important step “work” to make the work stand out.
